The New England Patriots and Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez have agreed to a four-year, $135 million contract extension with $102 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The deal carries an average annual value of $33.75 million, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. The agreement was reached less than 48 hours before New England’s 2026 season opener against the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle.
Gonzalez’s extension narrowly surpasses the four-year, $132 million contract Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon signed last month. Witherspoon’s deal included more than $101 million guaranteed. (ESPN)
Patriots Get Their Deal Done Just in Time

Gonzalez’s contract situation had been one of the biggest storylines surrounding the Patriots throughout the offseason and training camp. There was uncertainty about whether the 24-year-old cornerback would play without a new deal.
Gonzalez and his representatives at Win Sports Group reached the agreement with New England on Monday night, ending the uncertainty and securing one of the NFL’s premier young defensive backs for the long term.
A Record Deal for a Rising Star
Gonzalez entered the NFL as the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oregon. After appearing in only four games as a rookie because of an injury, he emerged as one of the league’s top cornerbacks.
